The training I do across 3 martial arts stems from the love I learned from my parents when I was around 3 years old. To start, my father introduced me to Filipino Martial Arts and Muay Thai as a game.

To me it was always a game, I got to spend time with my father and learn something cool that my body could do. I never really correlated the things I was learning were meant to cause damage. It was just fun.

As I got older, I never really took it seriously to get better until my parents opened up Impact Martial Arts Academy in 2008. We had a conversation after me and my siblings were giving attitude about not wanting to train anymore.

The conversation taught the three of us, me and my siblings, that just because our parents ran a training group it doesn’t mean we’re forced to train. They’d like us to but the choice was always left up to us whether or not we wanted to get on the mats.

From then on, I made the choice to train as a means to better myself and give back to the community who supports the group.

Business

Fast forward to today brings us to how Martial Arts is my primary form of providing for myself. I work for the academy, students pay tuition, I can pay my bills.

Standard business, pretty boring.

My main reason for doing what I do is for the love of my lifestyle. Looking at training as a means to self-improvement and sharing genuine human experience with others makes for what I see as a a worthy cause.

Giving children confidence and strength by providing opportunities for challenge. A safe place to get bumps and bruises, cry and overcome tears, make friends.

Being present for a student’s first competition after starting from Day One.

Going home knowing that I helped someone smile and learn something.

Those are the reasons I do what I do. It’s not really about me. I was blessed with strength and mental fortitude. It is my duty to give back and raise others to also be powerful human beings.

Lifestyle

If there’s anything I learned from this lifestyle and professionally working in the field for the last 7 years it’s that education and productivity are extremely valuable parts of a person.

If I were to start over, I’d complete my schooling for personal training, exercise science, and small business management much sooner.

What you don’t formally learn will be taught to you through hard-fought experience.

As a content creator, the value of productivity and maximizing the limited time you have each day is a challenge in itself.

The temptation of “I have time, I’ll do that tomorrow, I deserve some rest” is so strong when you have control over your schedule. That “tomorrow” turns to a week and then a month while growing into yet another trashed piece of your brain.

Waking up early to get the brain moving, having a solid plan on what to create, doing your job as efficiently as possible so you can destress properly are all important lessons I wish I valued when I was a younger adult.

It’s never too late to do better but knowing that you truthfully did your best helps your mind rest easy when all is said and done.
